A Pilot's Story

A Chesterfield Hero

Flight Lieutenant Roy Mather DFC AFC

Hello and thanks for visiting my website.

This is very much a work in progress and I welcome any suggestions for improvement. Huge parts of this site is still under construction, so please bear with me as I update. If anything of this site is of interest to you, please check back for updates and additions arising from any feedback from viewers and family members recollections.

This started out as a need to document my family's history before any more information is lost. A wealth of information seems to disappear with the loss of every family member and although the tide of departures seems to have abated somewhat, at times it has reached epic proportions, hence the need for this website.

We have long had people show interest in the career of our dad in the RAF from 1941 to 1964 with the interesting array of aircraft that he was fortunate enough to have flown, so there's no surprise that this was started primarily as a vehicle for this information and his list of achievements does make interesting reading such as :

  • Types flown including - Lancaster, Wellington, Halifax, Hurricane, York, B-29 Washington, Canberra, Valiant
  • 30 ops over France and Germany
  • Record 404 sorties during the Berlin Airlift
  • Pilot of a Valiant in SAC Bombing Competition

Please follow the links at the side of the page or the button links at the bottom to navigate the site. Most pictures on this site have been scanned in from photos and log books belonging to the family however some images are borrowed from other places. I have endeavoured to credit all images not from the family archive with the copyright owner where applicable, please contact me if you feel I have infringed any material rights to resolve the issue.

Thank you.

In a further update I have now finished a brief website about my maternal granddad John Cyril 'Jack' Mawson. an extremely gifted engineer and inventor of mining machinery. Was he the father of modern mechanised retreat mining? Read and make your own mind up. Follow this link:  Life of an Engineer - Jack Mawson
